Question by ace: Is poker a game or chance or a game of skill?
i play poker at school, and our headteacher has aid we are not allowed to play “games of chance.” But i think its mainly skill. what do you think?

In my opinion Poker is gambling. It is a combination of luck and skill. An example of skill: bluffing.

skill in that you must read opponents, play your cards correclty and be able to quickly tabulate odds in your heads to make the best move.
gambling in that the cards you get are random and unpredictable.
It’s like life. It’s about the skill you demonstrate making the most with the cards of chance that you are dealt.
It’s more of a game… people can bluff to win – even if they are losing.
It’s not like slots, where that is all luck. Poker is different, only a few people can be successful out of all those who try – becauses they’ve got skill.
“Games of Chance” is a term that is used to denote gambling games, and poker is considered a game of chance.
That being said, anyone who states that poker takes no skill has never played.
It is most definatly a game of skill. I used to play among the same group of 4 or 5 players. And usualy 2 would win out of the 5, but I used to win about 4 nights out of every 5. Although who wins each hand is often decided by luck, how much you win or lose on the hand isn’t decided by luck, so the skillfull player when getting a large number of bad hands will minimise his losses, the unskillfull player will end up losing everything he brought to the game during a losing streak. And likewise during a good run of hands the skillfull player will bet in such a way to maximise the amount in the pot during these hands. The unskillfull player will be disapointed when he`s just made his 4 of a kind, and he watches everyone fold, and makes next to nothing on the hand. So as long as the game goes on over several hours the best players will nearly always win. Even with stakes in the 10p to £2 range I have seen the good players make profits above £100, even in so called friendly games. Knowing the odds of making the hands is a big help and will tell you when you should be in a hand and when its right to fold.
Poker is deffently a game of skill. To prove this all you have to do is realize is there are people that play poker and make an awesome living from it. These people do not just get lucky all the time. They have skill and are able to beat other players. As the pros say “any hand is a winning hand if you can play it right.”
well it depends on how good you are at the game…..not that good then its a game of chance but if you know what you are doin in the game its a game of skill.

the skill is learning to bluff right; make sure you don’t give away your cards with facial expressions if you have a lousy hand, you can bluff but make sure you know you have a chance of winning cause if you don’t your probably gonna lose
chance is the cards and basically the whole game.you don’t expect any certain card you get it at random same with the flop, turn, and river; those are all chosen at random

You can practice and practice all the time, but that will never stop someone from getting a better hand than you on say the draw.
There is skill involved of course. Knowing when your hand is a piece of crap and when you are a shoe-in to win is all skill. But really it’s mostly chance.

in the short term, which could be anything from one individual tournament up to a year or so of playing regularly, luck can play the major role in winning or losing…but over the course of multiple years of playing regularly, your results are determined by your skill level, because the luck is relatively even over so much time and money is made or lost by your decisions

the ther part is getting your opponents to bet huge sums and have them losing it. It’s probably not a game of either if you dont play with money. Just go out, and buy some poker chips that way your just playing with little pieces of plastic or clay that have no worth.

Its some of both. California ruled it a game of skill an legalized it in card rooms. Put it this way. A lucky play will win on any given hand or day. A skillful player will win all his or her life. The long run in cards is much longer than most people understand. If you continually play better cards than your opponent you will win in the long run. Its just proabilility at that point. Other skills such as bluffing, hand reading, tells play a part as well in the hands of a skillful player
