Born on a cursed Friday the 13th in 1939, T.J. Cloutier never considered himself an unlucky guy. He was athletically gifted, playing baseball, football, and basketball through high school. The Texas native had a short stint as a professional football player in the Canadian Football League, but was forced to retire after a knee injury. The end of his competitive sports career marked the beginning of an incredible poker career. He is considered by many professionals as one of the most gifted poker players around. Cloutier has six World Series of Poker bracelets, in the 1987 limit Omaha, 1994 Omaha eight-or-better, 1994 pot-limit hold’em, 1998 pot-limit Omaha, 2004 seven-card razz, and 2005 no-limit hold’em events. He also won the 2004 Festa al Lago main event and the 2003 Bellagio Five-Star World Poker Classic. He has more than $5.7 million in tournament winnings, and was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame last year. Away from the table, Cloutier spends time with his wife and six children.

Texas hold 'em (also hold'em, holdem) is the most popular poker variant played in casinos in the United States.[1] Hold 'em is a community card poker game; meaning that certain cards are available to be used by all players (in contrast to games like stud or draw). Texas hold 'em is generally played with 2 to 10 players. A variety of strategy books about the game provide recommendations for proper play. Because each player only starts with two cards, and the remaining cards are shared, it presents an opportune game for strategic analysis (including mathematical analysis). Hold 'em is regarded as a highly positional game, since the order of betting is fixed throughout all betting rounds.[2] Because of the shared community cards, kickers are used to determine the winner more often than in other poker variants.

After slow but steady gains in popularity throughout the 20th century, hold 'em's popularity surged in the 2000s due to exposure on television, on the Internet, and in popular literature.[1] The no-limit betting form is used in the widely televised main event of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) and the World Poker Tour.
